New Energy Management Standards Help Demonstrate Energy Performance Improvement

Standards are critical in helping meet climate goals because they create a level playing field, providing transparency, reliability, and accountability. The ISO 50001 – Energy Management System Standard is a key example. This November, the International Standards Organization (ISO) published ISO 50047 – Determination of Energy Savings in Organizations, which builds on ISO 50001 by providing organizations with the additional guidance needed to calculate and accept with confidence the effect that implemented energy performance actions have had on facility-wide energy efficiency.

According to the Clean Energy Ministerial’s (CEM’s) Energy Management Working Group (EMWG), broad implementation of ISO 50001 across the commercial and industrial sectors globally could drive cumulative energy savings of approximately 62 exajoules by 2030, saving over $600 billion in energy costs and avoiding 6,500 MT of CO2 emissions. The projected annual emissions savings in 2030 are equivalent to removing 215 million passenger vehicles from the road.

However, determining the level of energy savings at industrial and commercial sites can be a challenging endeavor. While ISO 50001 requires the demonstration of energy performance improvement, it does not specify how to accomplish this.

“I believe that the ISO 50047 standard will be a very useful tool for energy managers and wider decision-makers, enabling a clearer identification of whether the combined effects of energy performance improvement actions have achieved real and lasting savings,” said Ian Byrne, Deputy Chief Executive of the National Energy Foundation and ISO 50047 Working Group Co-Convener.

The publication of ISO 50047 follows the release of another member of the ISO 50001 “family” of standards: ISO 50015 – Measurement and Verification of Energy Performance of Organizations. While ISO 50047 provides the means to demonstrate energy performance improvement at the organizational level, ISO 50015 guides practitioners through the basic principles of measurement and verification of energy performance. Together these standards serve as a common, internationally developed, and accepted platform for demonstrating energy performance improvement resulting from the implementation of ISO 50001.

ISO 50047, ISO 50015, and all other ISO 50001 standards are available through national standards bodies or directly from the ISO website.

An initiative under the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC), and G20 Energy Efficiency Action Plan, the EMWG and its global Energy Management Campaign seek to ensure that through strong international cooperation, ISO 50001 will continue to be a robust strategy for mitigating climate change globally.
